Our Pottery Studio
Using slab rolled construction, we start with 25 pound blocks of North Carolina clay. Slabs are rolled out to the thickness required for the items to be made. Then begins the fun part of cutting, building, binding, shaping, sculpting, embellishing, and forming each piece! Since everything is made from “scratch”, no two pieces are ever exactly alike. Pieces are then allowed to dry about one week and then kiln fired to a low temperature of cone 04 (in kiln speak)! Glazing is the next step. Pieces are kiln fired to a very high temperature (cone 6 in kiln speak). Seeing the finished pieces when the kiln is opened reminds me of running in to the Christmas tree on Christmas morning to see what Santa left! The entire process is exciting and each piece is gleefully made for YOU!
